So.... It’s been a while. Believe it or not I’m still here and still making art and still trying to sell it. Here is a brief rundown of what has happened since I posted last(roughly a year ago.) Parenting, parenting has been happening, shorty is growing bigger and smarter by the day. We’re at a point where we have to really watch what we say, damnit has been repeated a couple times. Work and coaching have been filling my evenings and the occasional weekend. Also I’m swamping myself in my graduate drawings, I’m currently building individual characters that are all going to come together in one massive piece for my thesis show. It will consist of my versions of nursery rhymes and fairytales, way more visually interesting and have a little off humor to it. Mixed throughout the characters will be plenty of pop culture references and plenty of my nerdiness. Below is a collection of images from the craziness that has happened to my last posts.
Good afternoon everybody! A little update on what we've got going so far. First a moment of silence for the final four loss, we all took that equally hard. Second there is some restructuring going on in the art department at FHSU, so that is a slightly confusing and crazy transition. More crazy for them but some switching of things around on my end. Third, art competitions galore! Lastly I have a workshop coming up in a few weeks in Fort Scott, I'm teaching a block printing class on the weekend.
I've been doing a lot of drawing for my graduate classes and with every project I have a test sheet I use to make sure everything is functioning like it should. Also the students get a hold of it from time to time and make their own mark on them. They take on quite the personality over the course of several projects. I've started taking pictures of them for a small collection of test sheet works. Here's a sample.
So I have not dropped off the planet, just been crazy busy. With the move last summer, becoming a dad, and working on my graduate degree I've been a little swamped. As for current events it's mostly grad work, I'm really getting some awesome stuff out of my drawing class. I've posted what I've been up to so far this semester in the drawing section. Markers, paint markers, and my all time favorite sharpie have been the main supplies used there. Painting wise I've been working from a model town that i created out of scrap foam core and hot glue. After reviewing my work on it I might have put in a little too much effort, but It's already happened.
Then on top of that Tiffany and I are adjusting to the new job title of Mom and Dad. Pace is amazing and the cutest little dude ever. I spent the entire spring break chilling with him and he is growing more and more everyday. Right now I'm pretty sure he's attached to his Momma and taking a nap.
Like many other artist I often run on minimal sleep and large amounts of either coffee, red bull, pop, or whatever form of caffeine I can get ahold of. With the spring coming to an end summer coming at us full speed here's a little doodle I did to a Starbucks Spring Edition cup a little while ago.
Alrighty, looking at when I last posted anything was July 2015 so I have a little bit to type here. Grab a snack this might take awhile.
I just finished up my first year at my new job as the art teacher at Wellsville High School. My friend and fellow art teacher DeAnna Morgan moved on to a different school and I made the move from Jayhawk-Linn. In the art room this year we did a massive mural that the majority of the work load was done by one of my students, mad props to Carsyn, it turned out awesome and changed the vibe in the room for sure. We converted another storage closet into a screen printing room and then printed league art shirts again. Next year hopefully we will be doing some experimenting with screen printing and ceramics.
This year I started working on my MFA through Fort Hays State University, to the disbelief of Brad LeDuc I'm focusing on painting. I've had courses in art history and drawing as well but the main focus is on painting. It will be much easier this upcoming semester with a set studio space to work in instead of moving around to three different locations.
We have managed to get some traction of the selling of our house and are due to move into our new home in Lawrence at the end of this month. Speaking of due, the newest addition to the Harrison family is due July 24th. We will be moved in and somewhat unpacked about the time the little one makes their appearance.
So there is the run down. Now that everything is some what starting to shake out I'll be more up to date with pictures of new work. Thanks for taking the time to read this.
I'm not dead, just crazy busy. There will be updates on all of the happenings to come.
Good morningish almost afternoon!
I've had a some what productive summer so far this year. I've continued the streak that I started last year by going to the hospital again. This time was a serious case of poison ivy! I've been working on my own stuff along with hosting open art room days. We completed our art camp and thought, we need more time. So we spend an hour or two in the art room once a week after weights. It's pretty awesome.
Also I attended a workshop in MAC this summer that earned me some graduate hours. I worked with watercolors presented by the one and only Wayne Conyers. The other day I was there was with Ann Zerger in the jewelry lab. It was awesome to be a student again, but it was also pretty cool to get let lose in the jewelry lab for a day. Here are some pictures of the work that I did while I was there.
One last thing! I will be at Biz Baz again this year in Lawrence, it's always an awesome couple days of art and cool people. I'll post more as it gets closer, thanks for checking in.
Good late morning! As I lay on the couch recouping from last night's festivities I thought maybe I should update my site a little bit. Both Tiffany and I are moving a little slow today after attending one of her friend's weddings in Kansas City. At one point during the wedding we were both standing outside on the balcony and watching the storm roll through the buildings. With the light reflecting off the clouds, paired with the lightening and the occasional rain drop it was almost enough to convince us that we should live there. Then we thought, how could a furry children handle not having a yard? So that crazy thought was chased from our minds and we returned to everyone celebrating inside. Speaking of those two crazy tail waggers here is their mug shot from their first 5k.
Alrighty, now to ramble about my art for a while. My students made it through art league and are wrapping up everything for the end of the year. They are also doing a very good job of raising money for a raku kiln, since going to the workshop that was hosted by DeAnna Morgan at Wellsville. I started painting on the drunk penguin painting again, I stopped working on the huge canvas that I was. I also have started working on a new fight poster. It isn't a presidential poster but it's pretty awesome. Here are a couple pictures of things I'm working on. As always thank you again for taking some time out of your day to check it out.
Howdy! Here is a quick update of current and just slightly passed events. First off, I entered the "Runner" painting along with some other pieces into the Bourbon County Art Show this month and was lucky enough to win first place in the painting category. I also received second place in mixed media with one of my cardboard landscapes. To go along with that I sold a drawing that I entered in the show as well. It was a rather good showing as it turns out. Three of my students entered piece into the show as well, they did not receive any awards but I was proud of them for just entering pieces into a show other than a high school competition.
Right now my major artistic focus has been on a large recycled canvas that my Mom saved for me. It's a challenge working on such a large scale and still managing to have detail in the painting. I was informed that we are going to host Art League again next year, so as of a couple hours ago my focus has shifted from my work to what can we do to make it awesome.
Thanks again to my Mom, I have five pieces in one of the Final Friday shows in Lawrence. It's a small selection of work and it gives a good example of the variety of my artistic style. I'm very excited about all the things going on right now and will try to keep everything as updated as possible. Like always, thank you for taking some time and checking out my site.
I'm painting and painting and taking a break from painting because it's driving crazy. I have about four paintings going right now trying to get ready for an upcoming show. Also I am currently waiting to hear back from a show that I entered three pieces into. It's my first juried show so I'm kind of nervous to see how my work stacks up against some other artists. As I get work done I will be putting pictures of them up on here.
Above is an extreme close up of a drunken penguin waiter painting I'm currently working on.
